There existed hardly any other ships in naval history that could have undertaken such a varied range of combat tasks, and so numerous, as the Royal Navy and Commonwealth ships did during both world wars. They kept watch without interruption for weeks and months, bravely confronted the elements of nature out on the high seas, and countered enemy surface ships, submarines, and aircraft. In the 20th century, most of the labor was performed by destroyers. ![]() ![]() However, behind each bright chapter in this part of naval combat history lies hard, sometimes barely perceptible, day-to-day work.
